The Power of Parks: #Yellowstone

Throughout 2016, National Geographic will celebrate the 100th birthday of the U.S. National Park Service. By the time the NPS was established, the United States already had 14 national parks—including Yellowstone, the first one in the world when it was created in 1872.

Everyone who has visited Yellowstone might name a different favorite spot, or view, or memory. The choices seem endless: soaring rock faces or otherworldly thermal features? Breathtaking vistas or brilliant starscapes? Memorable encounters with native wildlife, amusing tourists—or your own traveling companions?

Share your favorite views of Yellowstone by using the #Yellowstone hashtag on Your Shot by December 1, 2015. Senior photo editor Jessie Wender will curate a selection of images to be considered for publication in the special Yellowstone issue of National Geographic magazine in May 2016.

Your Shot member Alessandra Meniconzi describes her photo. “It is minus 35 degrees Centigrade and the wind bites more strong than ever over the peaceful and monotonous taiga of North Siberia. The Nenets are nomads eking out a precarious existence. In the camp there’s plenty for everyone to do. One of the Olya’s (6 years old) duties is to collect wood for the fire.” Photograph by Alessandra Meniconzi

Your Shot member Daisy Gilardini recounts capturing this image. “In February 2015 I was on a photo trip to Wapusk National Park to photograph the new born Polar Bears coming out of their den for the first time. After waiting for days at temperatures averaging -40/-50 Celsius we finally found this mother with two cubs. One of which decided to hitch a ride on mama’s butt.” Photograph by Daisy Gilardini

Your Shot member Colt Forney recounts capturing this image. “I Intercepted this incredible supercell thunderstorm while storm chasing near Wright, Wyoming on May 18, 2014. This storm conveniently followed one of the very few paved roads in eastern Wyoming, which seldom happens. I had to dodge sporadic hailstones that were tennis ball size to get this shot, one of which struck the car door right beside my camera!” Photograph by Colt Forney

Your Shot member Matthew Draper recounts his encounter with a female Humpback whale calf. “A large, inquisitive and almost dangerously playful female Humpback whale calf measures me with her pectoral fin. This image was captured on a very wide fisheye lens, which doesn’t quite show how close she really is. By measuring how close I am she can determine if her tail is going to come in contact with me as she swims past.” Photograph by Matthew Draper

For the first time we had two top shot photos tie with the same amount of votes. First image was taken by Roberto Pesce “Living the emotion to share its narrow boat with a fisherman in the peace of Inle Lake at sunset.” And the second image taken by Puneet Madan “Shot in the Arctic summer of 2015, this polar bear seems to be blissfully unaware of its rapidly shrinking habitat.” Photographs by Roberto Pesce and Puneet Madan
